Matua began in 1969 with a vision shared by brothers Bill and Ross Spence - to revolutionize the New Zealand wine industry. Since producing the first-ever bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc in 1974, Matua has been a mainstay of the New Zealand wine industry.
We now have the opportunity to join the team behind Matua and Squealing Pig, two distinctive brands within the Treasury Wine Estates portfolio for the 2027 vintage. Based at Matua, our winemaking team works with fruit from across New Zealand’s premier wine regions to produce wines spanning a range of styles and regional expressions.
We are seeking enthusiastic people to work alongside a close-knit team committed to quality. Whether you are building your winemaking experience or ready to take on greater responsibility, this is an opportunity to contribute, learn and be part of a busy New Zealand vintage.
About the role
Joining our close-knit winemaking team under the guidance of the Senior Winemaker, you will take a lead role in day-to-day vintage winemaking, managing fermentations, coordinating cellar priorities and anticipating requirements over the coming days.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing red and white fermentations and inoculations and helping oversee cellar and laboratory operations as required.
- Interpreting laboratory results and determining wine adjustments in consultation with the winemaking team.
- Prioritising cellar tasks and coordinating site resources, balancing daily demands with upcoming vintage requirements.
- Maintaining clear communication across teams to meet quality standards and production goals.
- Working closely with premium fruit parcels from across New Zealand.
- Providing practical direction and delegating cellar tasks as required, within the wider winemaking team’s guidance.
We are looking for candidates with:
- A tertiary qualification in winemaking or a related discipline, and practical winemaking or cellar experience appropriate to the role.
- A systematic, methodical approach and strong attention to detail.
- An understanding of winemaking processes and the ability to adapt to changing vintage demands.
- The ability to work effectively within a team and take initiative within their responsibilities.
- Clear communication skills and a commitment to wine quality.
- Knowledge of Vintrace or a similar winemaking system would be highly regarded.
